Why Maglev

What we offer our clients in magnetic levitation products

Energy saving — guaranteed

30% up to 55% energy savings (kWh) compared to conventional products. A 100 kW turbo blower can save more than 300 000 kWh per year at R3.50/kWh = R1 050 000 annual savings.

🌿

Environmental protection

No oil and no lubricant pollution for a clean work process. Based on a 300 kW Maglev vacuum pump, our product can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 897 tons per year on one machine.

🛡

Health & safety

Our Maglev products have a noise reduction of 80 dB compared to 130 dB of conventional machines.

🔧

Maintenance

Our Maglev products have no friction losses, leading to a 20 year+ maintenance-free lifespan.

Performance

Operating speeds of 55 000 rpm due to no friction losses. A Roots blower of 110 kW can be replaced by a Maglev turbo blower of just 75 kW.

R

The number that matters

One 100 kW turbo blower. One year. R1 050 000 back on the electricity bill.

Conventional vs Maglev

Three components become one

A conventional conveyor drive stacks an induction motor, a fluid coupling and a reduction gearbox. Our permanent magnet direct-drive pulley does the same job as a single machine.

Summary of differences

FeaturePMSM (VFD-controlled)Normal AC induction motor (DOL)
Starting ampsLow — typically at or below the full load currentHigh — typically 5 to 10 times the full load current
Current controlPrecise control of current is maintained by the VFD throughout the start processVery little control — the current spike is an uncontrolled rush
Required equipmentRequires a VFD to operate and achieve low starting ampsCan be started directly from the power line, though larger motors may use soft starters or star delta
Impact on gridMinimal impact on the power grid due to low, controlled starting currentCan cause significant voltage sags and stress power distribution equipment
Reason for differenceThe VFD builds up the motor's magnetic field in a controlled mannerThe motor acts like a shorted transformer at rest, drawing very high current until it builds up a back EMF
  • This high current can trip circuit breakers and cause large voltage drops in the power grid, especially for larger motors.
  • Reduced-voltage start: star delta or soft starters can be used to limit the inrush current of induction motors, but they are still not as efficient at current control as a VFD-controlled PMSM.

📈

3. The future of industry

Within the next decade, this technology is likely to become the standard across many industries. Companies that adopt it early will benefit from:

  • Lower energy consumption
  • Reduced carbon footprint
  • Lower noise levels
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Improved operational efficiency
  • Increased profitability and competitiveness

The concern is that we may spend years debating and evaluating technologies that have already been proven elsewhere, while competitors continue to advance.

🎓

01 · Motors

Permanent Magnet Direct-Drive Motor

In essence, our permanent magnet motors represent an evolution in electric motor technology, offering improved efficiency, greater precision and reduced maintenance.

  • Designed to replace: induction motors, gearboxes, V-belts, chain drives and control panels (VSD / soft start).
  • Efficiency and energy savings: with the change in load of belt conveyors and the feedback on operating parameters such as voltage, current and temperature, intelligent management is achieved through intelligent frequency conversion control.
  • Safety and reliability: the frequency conversion technology is highly reliable, the protection system is completely safe designed and it is basically maintenance free.
  • Voltage spikes: arresters limit the peak voltage, while capacitors control the rate of voltage rise (dV/dt) caused by steep wave fronts.
  • Interface: 1 RS-485 communication using the MODBUS protocol, allowing the reading of status parameters and the writing of control commands.
  • Rotor: contains permanent magnets (neodymium or samarium cobalt) generating a constant magnetic field.

Technology

How Maglev Works

Active magnetic bearings, permanent magnet rotors and six core technologies — the engineering behind the energy saving.

Working principle

Active magnetic bearing system

Active magnetic bearing system is the core system. The motor rotor is fixed between two radial bearings and two axial ones. The position of the rotor is detected by position sensor, conveying the position signal to the actuator controller in real time. If the rotor is offset, the controller will adjust the magnetic force of the degree of freedom of the magnetic bearing according to the offset of the rotor. So that the rotor is always in the correct position.

No contact means no friction losses — which is where the 55 000 rpm operating speed, the 80 dB noise level and the 20 year+ maintenance-free lifespan all come from.

What is inside a Maglev machine

AMB — Active Magnetic Bearing
Controllable electromagnetic force is used to suspend the blower shaft without contact and wear. It has the characteristics of no mechanical wear, low noise and no lubrication and so on.
Hydrodynamic impeller
The centrifugal impeller of high strength aluminium alloy processed by 5-axis precision machine tools is designed by three-dimensional flow method, which maximizes the efficiency of centrifugal impeller and has high service life.
High efficiency frequency converter
The high efficiency frequency converter is used to adjust the rotation speed of the high-speed permanent magnet motor. Devices can be monitored through an integrated HMI.
High-speed permanent magnet synchronous motor
The compact stator and filling-type permanent magnet rotor structure are adopted. It has the characteristics of high running speed, high efficiency and long service life.
PC controller
The PC-based DSP board and power amplifier are independently developed. It is economical and safe for centrifugal machinery.
Remote monitoring of the cloud platform
The deep integration of the Internet of Things technology and the big data technology. Provides information services for equipment operation and maintenance, production optimization, environmental protection monitoring, etc.

Reverse Carnot cycle

1

Compressor

The Maglev refrigerant compressor extracts low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant vapour from the evaporator. After compression it transforms into high-temperature, high-pressure vapour.

2

Condenser

The high-temperature, high-pressure refrigerant vapour condenses in the condenser, releasing a large amount of heat which is absorbed by the cooling water.

3

Expansion valve

The high-pressure liquid refrigerant passes through the electronic expansion valve for throttling and depressurizing, turning into low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant.

4

Evaporator

The low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant evaporates in the evaporator, absorbing heat from the chilled water and lowering its temperature — forming a continuous refrigeration cycle.

Belt conveyors

High efficiency, reliable and energy saving

A conventional conveyor drive system uses a typical induction motor, fluid coupling, reduction gearbox and a VSD or soft starter control panel. The advanced modern system uses a Maglev Africa permanent magnet motor. The most advanced is our permanent magnet motor direct-drive conveyor pulley.

  • Long service life, low maintenance, high performance
  • Replaces the original drive pulley, STD motor, fluid drive coupling, gear box, low speed couplings, base plate, torque arm and control panel
  • Available flame proof and non-flame proof

Spares & support

No production line in the industry can afford downtime

For implementation of new technology — here is how we protect your uptime.

Option 1 — EconomicalRecommended
Step 1
Removal of an existing working operating product to be used as a spare product kept in storage
Step 2
New Maglev product to be installed during maintenance hours
Step 3
In a faulty situation the Maglev product can simply be replaced with the previous existing working product
Trial
We also offer for a limited period our clients a three months trial period before purchasing with normal payment terms
Option 2Full redundancy
Approach
For one installation application the client can purchase two products and keep one in storage
Spare availabilityLead times
Spares delivery
All Maglev product spares are available and can reach our workshop in 3 days via air freight
Repair time
Total repair time on our products 5–7 days
Comparison
Our repair time frame is more effective than on a conventional power pack (e.g. conventional motor rewinding, gearbox repair, fluid coupling repairs)
Maglev Africa product presentation: detailed product presentation can be conducted at any client's premises. Alternatively, at our product display workshop for the actual visual and operating installation.
